The concept for EXACT was developed by Jon Berry, Cindy Phillips and Bill Hart at Sandia National Laboratories in 2003 and prototyped in Kojo Adams' undergraduate thesis. For several reasons, this initial prototype was rewriten in 2007. There was a fairly constraining taxonomy of objects in the original, and there was no clear distinction between information associated with experiments, controls, and analyses. Bill Hart collaborated with Cindy Phillips, Jon Berry and Bob Heaphy to design a new EXACT tookit that makes these distinctions explicit, uses a different taxonomy of objects, and uses XML files as the default medium for storing descriptions of experiments, analyses, and results.
